Trouble with money

After ten months of living in one of the richest countries in the world, I needed to experience something different. I needed to be helpful to people who really need, I wanted to see and experience the reality on my own. I knew it would be big, but I didn't expect that it would change my life so much.

I arrived in Kathmandu in the evening. As usual, I did not know so much about how it is there. So I had 113 dollars in cash and expected I would withdraw money in the airport. Passing the passport control and immigration, I was asked to pay 100 dollars for my three months visa. So I paid and I was leaving the airport with 13 dollars. Because I was not sure how to get from the airport in the late evening and didn't want to spend a fortune for a taxi to the city, I had booked a hotel within walking distance from the airport. The hotel is hidden in a narrow side street and the staff didn't expect anybody coming too late. Anyway I arrived, I got my private room with a cold shower and started getting used to the Nepali standards. In the morning I gave them 10 dollars (which was probably too much for the room and a bottle of water, but the communication with them was pretty difficult). I put my backpack on my shoulders and went for a walk around Kathmandu to reach the touristic place Thamel by foot (Hana always saves money).

I expected I would find an ATM and withdraw some cash. Buuuuut... Of course, nothing can be super easy, otherwise, I would not have any story to tell. So 3 dollars in my pocket, four different debit cards - one Australian, two Czech and one super international pay card which is supposed to work everywhere around the world (as I was told). I found the first ATM and with unconcealed joy I ran in and tried the first card. Nothing. So I tried the second, then third and then the last one. None worked. So I thought it was maybe a broken ATM. So I carried on walking on the broken dusty streets in the capital of Nepal. I found the second ATM, the same story. The third one, fourth one…. After trying the tenth ATM I started feeling nervous. What can I do? I didn't have cash, I was hungry, I had only 3 dollars that were not worth a hill of beans. I was about to ask somebody to share wifi with me and buy a ticket to somewhere outside of Nepal because it seemed there is no other way from this situation. But I did not give up and tried again and again. Maybe the twelfth ATM worked for me. OMG, I was so happy, even though I was allowed to withdraw only a limited amount of money and I knew I needed to get around 400 dollars which I collected from the international students in Australia for the kids in Nepal. But I was happy, I got cash and I could buy food. No starving anymore, at least this day.
